Outdoor Living: Creating Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Spaces
August 1, 2025Happy July everyone! Today, July 1st, marks four incredible years since I officially launched Rooted Architecture Studio. Every year that passes, I reflect with deep gratitude for the journey so far, and this year, I feel especially proud.
Over the past four years, I’ve grown as a designer, a business owner, and as a person. I’ve built relationships with clients who believe in our mission, partnered with like-minded collaborators, and continued to refine what it means to create healing, inclusive, and sustainable spaces. As well as, supporting those who need someone to support them to rectify violations and legalize existing conditions. Thank you to everyone who has supported Rooted Architecture Studio, your trust fuels our work. Read about our firm’s growth while celebrating 4 years of Rooted Architecture Studio.
To mark this anniversary, I want to take a moment not just to reflect on our journey, but to speak on something that often gets overlooked: Why do architects matter?
Here are the Top 4 Reasons Why Architects Matter, especially now, in this moment in history.
1. Architects Solve Complex Problems with Creativity and Purpose
Architecture is more than drawing plans or picking materials. At our core, architects are creative problem-solvers. We consider beauty, functionality, regulations, budget, and your goals all at once. We’re trained to think holistically, anticipate challenges, and create solutions that balance technical requirements with human experience.
From navigating zoning laws to designing accessible and inclusive spaces, we bring structure to complexity and turn ideas into built realities.
2. Architects Shape the World You Live In, In a Literally Way
Every space you enter, whether it is your home, workplace, doctor’s office, café, or community center was shaped by design decisions. Architects play a critical role in shaping the built environment, which in turn impacts public health/welfare/safety, community connection, climate resilience, and more.
At Rooted, we intentionally design spaces that promote wellness, support sustainability, and nurture belonging. Because how a space feels and functions can change how people live, heal, and grow.
3. Architects Are Advocates for People and the Planet
Architects don’t just design for now, we design for the next generation. We’re advocates for sustainability, equity, and inclusion in the built environment. We think about how buildings interact with nature, how design can uplift marginalized voices, and how systems (like lighting, air, and materials) affect the body and mind.
Especially as the climate crisis and social inequities grow more urgent, architects are uniquely positioned to lead with solutions that honor both humanity and the Earth.
4. Architects Are Your Partners, Not Just Service Providers
Working with an architect isn’t a transaction, it’s a collaboration. We’re here to listen to your goals, understand your values, and guide you through one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make. Whether it’s a renovation, new construction, or adaptive reuse, we help align your vision with clarity, creativity, and care.
At Rooted, we prioritize education, transparency, and empowerment throughout the design process because the best results come from partnership, not pressure.
Looking Ahead
As we step into Year 5, we remain committed to deepening our impact. We’ll continue designing healing, inclusive, and sustainable spaces, while also expanding our educational offerings about architecture for our clients and community.
Thank you for believing in us. Rooted Architecture Studio is here because of the trust you’ve placed in our work, and the belief that design can (and should) be a force for good.
Here’s to four meaningful years and many more ahead.
Keep growing,
Katherine A. Serrano Sosa, AIA | NCARB
