Architecture’s Role in Enhancing Mental and Physical Health
August 1, 2024Happy July everyone! Today, July 1st, we celebrate three years of Rooted Architecture Studio. I am full of gratitude and pride to see us reaching this important milestone and have a vision that there are many, many more years that will get celebrated. Thank you to everyone who has been our client, purchased a product, and supported us. I, especially, need to thank my family for all their support with the company and through my architecture career.
Reflecting back at the past 3 years of providing our services, I have learned many lessons of being an Architect and Entrepreneur. Honestly, these past 3 years have flown by, still so much has happened that fills my mind with so many memories…the good and the bad. Architecture school DOES NOT train us to be business owners, it is a skill I had to learn from observing past bosses, peers, doing research on my own and a skill I am still improving to this day. There have been so many trial and errors with Rooted and it has taught me to embrace change and so much more. With that in mind, I wanted to take this special blog post to dive into some of the lessons learned in the past three years. Below you will find the top three lessons from each year in business.
Lessons From Year One (July 2021-2022)
- Learned 6 months in that running the company as a side project was not enough, and became a part-time consultant for my previous job.
- Learned how valuable it was to have an educator mindset when meeting with clients and that they really appreciated me explaining the process step by step. Something that to this day I do.
- Learned that my networking approach was not working for me because I was meeting people who saw networking as transactional and not as a way to nurture a connection.
Lessons From Year Two (July 2022-2023)
- Learned that I was ready to do this full time and on Feb. 1st, 2023 I stopped consulting for my previous job.
- Learned that I cannot do it all by myself to grow. With that in mind, I hired Decena Media to redesign my website and become my social media manager. As well as, hiring at first part-time help and leading to hiring the first full-time drafter.
- Learned to find more aligned networking groups and began creating great connections/relationships with great people.
Lessons From Year Three (July 2023-2024)
- Learned that I needed to work on my business development and began to invest in a business coach, financial advisor, public speaking classes, and legal advisor. This also helped me personally as the business development really informed my personal life as well.
- Learned to be a better public speaker, which has helped me with creating the webinars/courses to educate and to be empowered to do Instagram lives and in-person presentations.
- Learned to get back to the roots of my passions and, which pivoted the company’s mission and vision to be more aligned with who I am and what I care about. This allowed me to speak more on and do projects that integrate sustainability, biophilic design and the overall idea of creating healing spaces.
Looking Forward
With reflecting back, I also want to envision what is to come for the company and what I am excited to accomplish this upcoming year. I am passionate about bringing more educational courses and booklets for you. I am also very excited to see what new projects we work on next and showcase the value to bring to them. Currently, we have a great line up of projects that span from small scale about 150 SF to 72000 SF, and I definitely hope to get to work on a spectrum of sizes still with medium to larger projects as the predominant scale. Lastly, I hope to work with clients that align with our mission and vision, creating a collaboration to bring to life spaces that are meaningful, inclusive, and bring wellness and comfort to the end-users.
